During the Roots and Routes Season of Hull UK City of Culture 2017 you are invited to the Preview of The Transglobal Art of Mark Wigan Exhibition on Thursday 6th April 2017 6pm to 8pm The exhibition continues weekends 10am to 4.30pm until 8 May 2017. Mark Wigan Williams is a contemporary visual artist recognised internationally as an influential illustrator and pioneer of urban art in London ,New York and Tokyo in the 1980s.
Wigans approach is interdisciplinary crossing fine art, illustration and urban art and his prolific output includes regular international gallery exhibitions, live painting performances, theatre and television set design, animation, public art commissions, music graphics and mural paintings.
Most recently his vibrant artwork has featured on a collection of boots, shoes, backpacks and t shirts for Dr Martens. The acclaimed DrMartensXMarkWigan Collection has been enthusiastically received all over the world.
'If a picture tells a thousand words Wigans drawings are worth an entire library of professorial works on pop culture, early works from 1985 are now revealed as astonishingly accurate maps, showing the development of the attitudes that defined sub cultures' -The Independent Newspaper
'Paris had Toulouse Lautrec, Londons got Wigan an artist whose poser packed drawings immortalise the murky menagerie of late night hipsterdom' -The New Musical Express
Wigan's work revitalises more stoic forms of social realism with a neon -bright parade of semi fictitious cult classics, snap crackle and popping their way through the heated hordes of club land -The Face Magazine

Lets Groove Tonight
'Lets Groove Tonight' An exhibition of paintings, drawings and photography by artist Sue Tilley.
Preview: Friday 4th November 6pm - 8.30 pm
Sue Tilley was a best friend of Leigh Bowery who became a huge influence on her life. After he died in 1993 she wrote his biography which has become a cult classic.
Leigh Bowery introduced her to Lucian Freud who painted her four times. One painting, ‘Benefit Supervisor Sleeping’ went for over £17,000,000 in 2008 which at the time was a world record for a painting by a living artist sold at auction.
‘When I was asked me to do a show at The Museum of Club Culture I immediately wondered what I could have as a theme. It was obvious …Going Out.
I have been regularly going out since the age of 14 and have worked in some of London’s legendary nightclubs, including Taboo, The Wag, Prohibition, Bar Industria and the CafĂ© de Paris.
I am including portraits of my friends Leigh and Trojan and other people from the club scene past and present…also things to do with club culture such as make up, booze, fags and poppers.I mainly work in Acrylic but have been recently dabbling in oils. There will also be a few drawings.’ Sue Tilley
Exhibition continues for 3 weekends :
5th and 6th, 12th and 13th, 19th and 20th November 2016

Soft Wax
Thursday, 18 August 2016
Soft Wax at The Museum of Club Culture
We are delighted invite Soft Wax to The Museum of Club Culture during The
Freedom Festival on Saturday
3rd and Sunday 4th September 12pm to 6pm
Suite 5, 42 High St, Hull, HU1 (admission free)
Soft Wax operates on the margins where music meets sound art, meets installation art and visual art, led by Steve Wax.
Steve Wax has been a Zelig-like figure in the sphere of roots rock rebel music for several decades. As the fulcrum of the Soft Wax project, he has been at the helm of some of the UK’s best dub and reggae nights, as well as performance art and installation events.
Much of the diverse output of Soft Wax is inspired by popular music and concerned with cultures of resistance. In the original ‘Soft Wax’ project and spin-offs, that music was the various mid-to-late 50s styles (principally R&B), as heard on the earliest sound systems in Britain. Soft Wax’s work is also inspired by music of Jamaican origin, with considerable attention paid to visual and cultural presentation in his shows.
Supported by Arts Council England National Lottery, City Arts Development (Hull City Council).

Juxtaposition
Juxtaposition
an exhibition of contemporary collage and video art
at
The Museum of Club Culture, Hull
Suite 5, Bond 31, 42 High Street, Hull, HU1 1PS.
Launch Friday 17th June 6pm - 8.30pm
Continues weekends until July 10th 11am - 4pm
On a summers night in 1916 in a small nightclub called The Cabaret Voltaire in Spiegelgasse Zurich, the subversive and irreverent literary and anti -art movement called DADA was born.
Dada was an international movement fueled by disgust for the causes and horrors of the First World War, they challenged the conformity of social, political and cultural values of the time. Working to redefine art Dada swiftly spread from Switzerland to Berlin and New York where instead of painting many Dadaists worked in the mediums of collage, assemblage and photo-montage. Creating visual puns they cut up and mixed random fragments of texts, photographs and found objects.
Hugo Ball wrote the DADA manifesto delivering it at The Cabaret Voltaire in July 2016, 100 years later The Museum of Club Culture celebrates the enduring legacy of the Dadaist provocateurs and their diverse artistic output of art, poetry and performance with ‘Juxtaposition’ (the fact of two things being seen or placed close together with contrasting effect) which is the first exhibition in our cross- media Cut Up and Mix programme of interventions by artists from around the world taking place in Hull during 2016 and 2017 Hulls year as UK City of Culture.
Evoking the spirit of DADA the Juxtaposition exhibition will include collage, assemblage and sound and video art from artists including:
Michelle Thompson, Martin O’Neill, Paul Burgess, Austin Von New, Mark Wigan, Louisa Minkin, Gordon Dawson, Priya Sundram, Kerry Baldry, Chris Harper, Marcel Craven, Michael Szpakowski and more
