Sue Tilley was a best friend of Leigh Bowery who became a huge influence on her life. After he died in 1993 she wrote his biography which has become a cult classic.
Leigh Bowery introduced her to Lucian Freud who painted her four times. One painting, ‘Benefit Supervisor Sleeping’ went for over £17,000,000 in 2008 which at the time was a world record for a painting by a living artist sold at auction.
‘When I was asked me to do a show at The Museum of Club Culture I immediately wondered what I could have as a theme. It was obvious …Going Out.
I have been regularly going out since the age of 14 and have worked in some of London’s legendary nightclubs, including Taboo, The Wag, Prohibition, Bar Industria and the Café de Paris.
I am including portraits of my friends Leigh and Trojan and other people from the club scene past and present…also things to do with club culture such as make up, booze, fags and poppers.I mainly work in Acrylic but have been recently dabbling in oils. There will also be a few drawings.’ Sue Tilley
Exhibition continues for 3 weekends :
